Today's post features the Biker Grandpa patch from the IT-patches section at The Cheap Place. I sort of look at this post as a public service announcement on behalf of older bikers everywhere. I say that because if you had shown me this patch 20 years ago I would have laughed at the very thought of grandpa riding Harley Hawg. But now I'm 46 years old, potentially a new grandfather in a year or so, and this doesn't seem so out of place anymore. I guess when I'm saying is, why can't grandpa be a biker too?
I suppose this all comes from a cultural upbringing that has trained us to picture grandma and grandpa as enjoying their retirement years playing golf and driving a Buick. But being less than 15 years for my own retirement I can see that's not realistic for everyone. In fact, many of today's seniors are not allowing themselves to be limited by stereotypes; neither should you or I.
So to all of you biker grandparents out there, now's the time to stand up and show your pride in both. Show your biker friends that you're proud to be a grandparent, and show those grandkids and your own children and you're proud to be a biker. Grandpa's everywhere, get one of these patches and sew it to your leathers, iron it to a jean jacket, or put it on a hat. One way or the other it's time to break the mold!
