While everyone knows the army, air force, navy, and marines, some people forget that the US Coast Guard is a branch of the armed services. While it's true that the coast guard doesn't seem combat as often as other branches of the military do, its members do put their lives on the line to rescue ships in distress. Like some similar rocker patches, this one is more than just a black arch with words on it. It also features a split U.S. flag on either side of the 'US Coast Guard' rocker. The coast guard originated as the Revenue Marine first, a military group created by Alexander Hamilton. It is the only branch of the military to have a maritime law enforcement mission that gives it jurisdiction in both U.S. and international waters. It's also unique in that during peacetime, the coast guard is under the Department of Homeland Security, but during wartime, it falls under the Department of the Navy.
