Missouri, also called The Show Me State, became the 24th state of the U.S. on August 10, 1821. It's bordered by 8 other states and is the 21st largest state. The capital is Jefferson City, which many people forget because St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield are larger and more well-known. Missouri was purchased from France as a part of the Louisiana Purchase and was then called Missouri Territory until it became a state.
St. Louis is the largest metropolitan area in the state and is actually an independent city, having seceded from St. Louis County in 1877. It has hosted the World's Fair and the Olympic Games (both in 1904) and is home to several major sports teams. The Gateway Arch, a large landmark featured in downtown St. Louis, is often associated with the city and the state.
One interesting fact about Missouri is that, with only two exceptions, Missourians have accurately predicted the Presidential election since 1904. Called the Missouri bellweather phenomenon, it has led to the saying 'As Missouri goes, so goes the nation'. However, after failing to predict the 2008 election, the state may have lost its fortune-telling ability.
