Is This Patch Unlucky?

13 Patch OvalThere are a number of small cool patches on The Cheap Place.  These little patches can be fit in around larger back patches or can be used to decorate small items like canvas wallets or belts.  You can also use them to cover small rips in your pants, or add a lot of them to the back of your jacket to really make it look amazing.  This 13 Patch Oval is a pretty simple little patch, but it can be a fun one to add to your clothing.  All it has on it is the number 13, which some people find incredibly unlucky.

Why is thirteen unlucky?  Well, there are several different odd things concerning the number 13, but there really is no reason why some cultures consider it the unlucky number.  One of the earliest references to 13 being an unlucky number is in the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi, where for whatever reason the thirteenth law is skipped, much like the thirteenth floor is sometimes skipped in hotel or hospital elevators.  Then there's the fact that Judas was the thirteenth disciple to sit at the table of the Last Supper.  Loki, the trickster god of Norse religion, is sometimes connected to the number 13, especially in connection to the murder of the beloved god Balder.

No one really knows why the number 13 became unlucky, but some people have an unnatural fear of it.  This fear, called triskaidekaphobia, would probably keep them from wearing this patch!  But if you believe that 13 is just a number, this little patch could make a fine addition to your jacket.  It measures 2.75 inches by 2 inches and can be either sewn or ironed on.
