Many U.S. Army personnel have spent time in Afghanistan in recent years as participants in the Afghani War. This war, which is actually a new phase of a conflict that began in 1978 with Afghanistan, has been very controversial. However, just because people do not necessarily agree with the war doesn't mean our soldiers aren't respected or honored for their participation in it. If you've been to Afghanistan in the service of your country, you have earned the right to proudly wear this Afghani War Veteran U.S. Army Round Patch on your jacket. It can be found in the U.S. Army Patches section on The Cheap Place.
Troops began deploying to Afghanistan in October of 2001 from the U.S., the U.K. Australia, and from the Afghan United Front. The main reason was retaliation for the September 11 attacks on the U.S. The U.S. set the goal of capturing the leaders of the al-Qaeda terrorist group and, if possible, even removing the Taliban from control of the country. While the Taliban is no longer in power and some major al-Qaeda leaders have been captured or killed, the conflict is not over. The Afghani War is the United States longest running war, and it's not yet over.
This round patches measures three inches across. While it does look kind of like a creepy eye, that's only because the center part of the circle features the colors of the ribbon awarded by the U.S. Army for service in Afghanistan. The ribbon features symmetrical blocks of green, red, black, white, and then red, white, and blue in the center. The outside circle reads 'Afghani War Veteran US Army' and features two yellow peace ribbons.
