The back has been specially coated with a heat activated adhesive that will bond to most fabrics simply by ironing on the patch. It can also be sewn on around the edges with either a machine or by hand. If you want to attach the patch to a leather item, then you will have to place it on with stitches instead of ironing it on. This is because the heat transfer to the leather can cause problems in the material and can actually pucker or disfigure the leather. If the material cannot withstand an iron, the patch has to be sewn.
