Today's post takes us to the Korean Defense US Army patch and one of America's forgotten wars. It's in the Military Patches section, and it's a patch well-suited to the breast pocket of an Army field jacket or uniform. This simple piece offers neither funny sayings nor bright or bold images; just the simple color bars of the military. In its simplicity, it is profound.
The Korean War only lasted 37 months, yet it was devastating to the American military psyche. We had never lost a military conflict in our nation's history. But coming out of Korea there was no clear winner. In fact, the conflicts that existed between North and South raged on between them for years after the war. Today, though they aren't shooting at one another, tensions remain high.
The Korean conflict, along with Vietnam some 20 years later, has been largely forgotten. But not among veterans and their families. They haven't forgotten their friends and loved ones who died; they haven't forgotten those who never returned; they haven't forgotten the South Korean people for whom they were fighting.
This patch is the perfect remembrance for Korean veterans from the U.S. Army. And if you're not a veteran, you might want one in memory of a father or grandfather who served. Regardless, just like we should never forget the heroes of the "big" wars, we should never forget those from Korea and Vietnam. In some small way this patch helps keep the memories alive.
