Patches With Historical Meaning

So kids, you like American history? Do you like flags? If so, The Cheap Place carries the Gadsden Flag patch; a small replica of one of the earliest flags in U.S. history. You can find it on the first page of Flag Patches on The Cheap Place website. It's a 3" rectangular patch featuring a coiled rattlesnake against a yellow background and infamous the phrase, "Don't tread on me."

The original flag was designed by Revolutionary war general Christopher Gadsden based on images he'd seen painted on the drums of Marines in 1775. These Marines had been mustered to accompany the newly-formed U.S. Navy in an attempt to stop the British from delivering more troops to the colonies. Gen. Gadsden made the first edition of his flag and presented it to Navy Commodore Esek Hopkins as a personal standard.

As much as I love Old Glory, part of me wishes that Gadsden's flag had been adopted as our national standard. The "don't tread on me" mentality is what gave birth to this great nation and it's that same fierce independence that separates America from most of the rest of the world.

May I suggest that you purchase one of these patches and sew it on your vest right next to the Stars & Stripes? It will be a reminder to you of our heritage as a nation, as well serving as a good conversation starter when others see it for the first time.
