My Dad was a biker in his younger days and says he loved to ride his motorcycle. However, when he met my mother and my older sister and I were born, he decided to give up his bike in order to settle down and buy himself a family car. But he never gave up on his dream of one day owning a bike again and taking to the roads.
My mother on the other hand never liked bikes and always felt that they were too dangerous and she hoped that one day my father would forget about wanting to get back out on the highway. And for a while he did. We grew up and moved out and had children of our own and he and my mother decided to spend most of their time traveling once my father had taken early retirement.
However my mother passed away a couple of years back at the still relatively young age of 60. My father was 58 at the time and was of course devastated as were we all. But over the last year he has become one of the grumpiest men around. And he also decided to put his dreams of owning a bike again into reality.
He arrived at my home on a big Harley fully clad in leathers and a shiny red helmet. It has got to have been one of the funniest images I have seen in a long time. But he doesn't care. And he has become prone to buying himself biker patches for his leathers that he wants me to sew on. One of the first ones he bought was the Biker Grandpa Patch which my little boy thinks is fantastic. He loves the motorcycle much to my husband's dismay and has ideas of getting one himself when he is older. Hopefully by the times he's old enough to drive one he'll have forgotten about it. I share my mother's view on them.
Anyway, I decided to buy my father another embroidered patch for his jacket which I sewed on for him the last time he left his jacket with me. The Warning Retired Knows It All Patch is perfect for him. It actually reads 'Warning, retired, knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it' and hopefully will serve as a warning to anyone stupid enough to get into any type of serious discussion with him. I feel it is only my duty to warn others before they get in too deep!
