What is an Iron on Patch?

Embroidered Iron on Patches are pieces of cloth fabric with designs and text embroidered on them. Once the cloths are embroidered they are heat pressed on to a plastic iron on backing and then have their edges trimmed. Our iron on patches also feature an embroidered border around the edges to make it easier to have them sewn on to clothing where ironing on would normally not work. Such as leather, suede or Nylon. These fabrics cannot withstand the 270 degrees Fahrenheit heat required to adhere an iron on patch. How Well Do Iron on Patches Stay On?

If ironed on properly an iron on patch will stay on permanently given your iron on patch is made using high quality iron on glue. We use a Japanese brand iron on glue on our patches. We also use a heat press to apply patches which applies the pressure and the exact temperature required to iron on the patch to a piece of clothing.

Is it Better to Sew or Iron on a Patch?

Sewing on a patch is always the preferred method to attach a patch to your clothing. Reason being the glue on the back of your iron on patch is heat activated. If you were to throw in your clothes in a dryer with a patch iron on to it, there is a likelihood that the glue might come loose. If you don't have a heat press to iron on a patch you are most likely not going to be able to properly iron on a patch permanently to your clothes. You can always try to iron on patch, if you can't get it to stick on you can always retry ironing on or just get it sewn on.

Do Iron on Patches come off in the wash?

We recommend washing your clothes with iron on patches in cold water. If the patch was properly ironed on, washing it in cold water will not make your patch fall off. Skip the dryer though! Air dry your clothing that have patches ironed on to them.

Why are my iron on patches not sticking?

Main reason your iron on patches won't stick is it might not even have iron on glue applied to the plastic backing. All our patches (with the exception of blank patches) have iron on glue applied over the plastic backing. In the ironing on process, the objective is to get the glue to the right temperature to activate it for adhering. Some people think using the highest setting in your iron is the way to go. This is completely false. If you use excessive heat you'll start to melt the plastic backing. Sure the plastic material will temporarily stick to your fabric if you do this, but it will not stay on permanently. You do not want to melt the plastic on to your clothing, you just want to use the right amount of heat to activate the invisible layer of glue. Just because a patch has a plastic backing does not mean it has iron on glue applied over it. Make sure the patch you buy is an actual iron on patch.

How do you put patches on without sewing?

If your patch is an iron on patch, you can use a heat press to attach the patch to your clothes. If your patch has cloth backing you can try using PatchAttach which is very much like superglue specifically designed for use with clothing. How to go about Sewing a Patch

People sometimes ask if they peel off the plastic backing when sewing on an iron on patch. The answer is no. You should leave the plastic iron on backing where it is. This keeps the patch sturdy and holds together the embroidery tightly. Please don't remove the plastic backings even if you are sewing on the patch. The plastic iron on backings are permanently stuck on the embroidered patch. Removing it would be tearing the patch apart.
